5 Hal Kelemahan BlackBerry
Menurut NPD Group, tiga dari lima smartphone dengan penjualan terbaik di kuarter pertama ini adalah BlackBerry. BlackBerry ciptaan RIM tersebut berbasis keyboard fisik untuk mengirim dan menerima email. Walaupun smartphone BlackBerry memiliki fitur lainnya berupa multimedia playback dan touchscreen, namun ada beberapa hal yang harus diperbaiki RIM untuk maintain Blackberry.
Browser. Tidak seperti iPhone atau Palm Pre, karena BlackBerry tidak menampilkan halaman wb seperti di PC. Pengguna BlackBerry juga justru menghadapi penampilan halaman web versi mobile seperti di tahun 90-an. Pengguna BlackBerry juga mengkomplain mengenai lambatnya browser. Namun, mengenai hal ini, RIM belum memberikan komentar. Di bulan lalu, RIM membeli Torch Mobile, yang membuat browser Iris berbasis Webkit. Webkit merupakan layout engine yang juga digunakan di iPhone, Android dan Symbian. Namun, belum diketahui kapan RIM akan menggunakannya.
Touchscreen. RIM memperkenalkan ponsel touchscreen pertamanya di BlackBerry Storm. Namun, kini RIM membuat haptic feedback dengan semua tombol di layar,ketika virtual key tidak bisa membantu. Namun, Storm justru menjadi lebih lambat dibandingkan iPhone atau BlackBerry dengan keyboard fisik. Tetapi, RIM telah memperbaiki Storm di Storm 2 akhir tahun ini dengan improvisasi touchscreen yang baru, dan bahkan mampu mengalahkan benchmark iPhone touchscreen untuk term responsive dan kemudahan penggunaan.
App Store. Dengan jumlah jutaan pengguna iPhone, BlackBerry App Store sepertinya sulit untuk menyusul App Store. Hal ini mengingat Apple iPhone App Store memiliki 70,000 aplikasi yang dijual, sedangkan BlackBerry App Store hanya 2,322 aplikasi. Namun, iPhone sendiri lebih difokuskan untuk produk komersial, sedangkan BlackBerry untuk pebisnis. Bahkan, terdapat 45 persen pengguna BlackBerry berasal dari non-bisnis. Jika RIM ingin membuat BlackBerry lebih menyenangkan untuk digunakan, maka RIM harus menyaring banyak developer dan menaruh marketing di App Store-nya.
Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi telah menjadi fitur populer di mobile phone. Namun, untuk BlackBerry Storm dan Tour memang telah memiliki akses 3G, tetapi tidak ada Wi-Fi. Untuk itu, RIM telah menghadirkan model bernama Essex yang memiliki semua fitur dari Tour, plus adanya Wi-Fi.
Software desktop. Walaupun pengguna BlackBerry cukup banyak, namun mereka sering merasa kesulitan untuk mengatur music dan data dengan software RIM. Software desktop BlackBerry dapat berjalan di PC dan didesain untuk kemudahan transfer file, music dan data. Namun, system software tersebut juga mengalami masalah proses setup. Untuk itu, RIM memperlukan perbaikan di software BlackBerry-nya untuk kemudahan penggunaan seeprti memutar iTunes di iPhone.
